HISTORY
Pueblo Cooperative Care Center was
established in 1982
in response to a major lay-off crisis by Pueblo’s leading employer
(CF&I) currently known as Rocky Mountain Steel Mills. This situation
triggered immediate and unexpected devastation for hundreds of families
in Pueblo County. Answering the “call to action,” five local
(downtown)
churches launched an emergency assistance program to meet the needs of
these families. Today, the Center is the largest emergency FOOD service
provider for low income families and individuals serving over 25,000 per
year. The church partnership has grown to include 28 churches. Monetary
support has also expanded in areas such as corporate, private individuals,
city/county, United Way,
and various foundations
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
It’s the right
thing to do! A recent study
by the Colorado
Children’s Campaign indicates that Pueblo County’s child poverty
rate is at a staggering 25.4%. Pueblo County families exceed the state
average in the area of public assistance. The proportion of single-parent
families with related children below poverty is 35% while the state average
22%. The median family income is also significantly lower (28
%) lower that the state as a whole. You can extend your love to the community
by coming along with us on this tremendous journey of love and hope.
